SAFETY CORNER

AUGUST 2026

August Theme: Safety on the Roads and at Home

As summer winds down, routines change—and so do the safety hazards around us. School buses return to the roads, children are walking and biking to school, and busy mornings can lead to distractions at home and behind the wheel. August is the perfect time to refresh the safety habits that protect not only your family, but everyone sharing the road. A few extra moments of awareness can prevent a lifetime of regret.

Children are unpredictable. Your driving shouldn’t be.

  • Slow down and obey posted school zone speed limits: Reduced speeds give you more time to react.
  • Stop for school buses: Never pass a bus with its stop arm extended and flashing lights activated.
  • Watch for children crossing unexpectedly: Kids may step into the street without looking.
  • Eliminate distractions: Put your phone away and stay focused anywhere near schools or bus stops.

A heavy backpack shouldn’t become a daily burden.

  • Choose backpacks with wide, padded shoulder straps: They help distribute weight more evenly.
  • Wear both shoulder straps: One-strap carrying places unnecessary strain on the neck and back.
  • Pack only what is needed: Extra books and supplies add unnecessary weight.
  • Use insulated lunchboxes with ice packs: Keep lunches at a safe temperature until mealtime.

The start of the school year is a great time to review family safety habits.

  • Review emergency contact information: Make sure children know important phone numbers and addresses.
  • Establish safe arrival routines: Teach children to check in when they arrive home from school.
  • Keep walkways and entryways clear: Backpacks, shoes, and sports equipment can quickly become trip hazards.
  • Practice basic home safety: Remind children about locking doors, avoiding strangers, and knowing what to do in an emergency.

  • Slow down and stay alert in school zones and around buses
  • Help children wear and pack backpacks properly
  • Keep lunches safe with insulated containers and ice packs
  • Review home safety rules and emergency plans with your family
